Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Knippa, TX passed second vote to leave the ELCA by 86%. They have joined the LCMC.

Beaver Valley Lutheran Church, Valley Springs, SD failed to pass first vote to leave the ELCA. The vote was 152 in favor of leaving, 102 opposed to leaving.

We are adding to our list of congregation having taken their first vote to leave the ELCA Hope Lutheran Church, Freeman, SD. That successful vote took place October 12, 2011. They were scheduled to take the second vote January 22, 2012, but we have yet to hear the results.

The battle for life rages on in America. Every follower of the Author of Life, Jesus Christ, needs to be in this battle. Below you will find a beautiful poem MOMMY PLEASE, by my granddaughter, Olivia Barnhart, written when she was 15 years of age. Also, included below is an article about a baby born at 24 weeks who was released from the hospital recently. It should give us cause for pause as we think of how many little lives are killed through abortion at that age--some sooner, some later! Let us pray and labor that this killing of our precious unborn will be halted!

Dear Catholic Bishops of Minnesota,

I am writing in response to an open letter addressed to you by Bishop Herbert Chilstrom, a former bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), in which he expressed his support for the homosexual lifestyle and for same-sex marriage, and in which he challenged your stand against the same.

As a Lutheran pastor I want to make clear Bishop Chilstrom’s opinions regarding these matters do not reflect the beliefs of Bible-believing Lutherans, nor does the counsel he gave you reflect the clear teachings of God’s Word. Most of all, I express my profound regret that a former ELCA bishop has advised you under the banner of Lutheranism to set aside the clear teachings of the Scripture and accept, instead, the opinions of men.

In his letter Bishop Chilstrom challenged you to find time for an extended visit with 15 homosexuals, and afterwards spend a quiet hour reflecting on a single question— “As I understand the heart of my Savior Jesus, how would he treat these sons and daughters of my church?” The former bishop seems to believe that if only you spent more time getting to know homosexuals, your opposition to their agenda will fade away.

Regrettably, while Bishop Chilstrom asked you to spend time pondering what homosexuals might say, he did not ask you to spend time with God’s Word or read its unequivocal statements that identify homosexual behavior as sinful. Instead, he asked you to restructure your beliefs according to the misguided reasoning and beliefs of the homosexual community. Extended visits with homosexuals could reap a harvest for God’s kingdom, if both law and gospel were rightly presented to them and if repentance of sin ensued. However, without a true presentation of God’s Word, such visits would be futile.

In his letter Bishop Chilstrom did not offer a single verse of Scripture for your consideration; instead, he asked you to draw conclusions from your own reasoning about “how Jesus would treat these sons and daughters of my church.” The sad fact is this— the ELCA long ago exchanged the authority of Scriptures for the opinions of men. Yet, apart from Scripture it is impossible to know the heart of Christ or discern His will regarding the issues of life.

Because Jesus loves homosexuals and all sinners, He directs us to speak His truth in love and bid them to “go, and sin no more,” just as He said to the woman caught in the act of adultery (John 8:11). According to Jesus, “Scripture can never be broken” (John 10:35). Thus, we may be certain that the incarnate Son of God would never go against His own divine revelation by accepting the sinful lifestyle of homosexuals or sanctioning same-sex marriages!

God’s Word declares, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His Word is not in us” (1 John 1:9-10). Nowhere in the Scriptures are we instructed to accept the homosexuals’ chosen life of sin and shame. However, the Bible does direct us to witness both law and gospel to them, calling them to repentance and faith in Christ. Homosexuals, like all of us sinners, must come to Christ, repent, and receive by faith the One who died for them. Those who do so will not only be saved, they will be set free from the bondage of sin and their lives will be forever transformed.

The good news of Christ’s gospel is this—Our Lord is able to change and transform lives, and the Holy Spirit is able to empower them to walk in true obedience to His Word. Paul writes, “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

Finally, I applaud your stand against abortion, homosexual acts, same-sex marriage, as well as the adoption of children by same-sex couples. I especially applaud your support of Minnesota’s proposed “Marriage Amendment.” As bishops, it is your duty to uphold the teachings of the Bible on these matters, which is precisely what you are doing. Such a stand is worthy of commendation, not condemnation. I encourage you to hold the blood-bought ground and lift high God’s Word, that people will hear the truth from bishops whose God-given responsibility it is to uphold truth!

Lutheran leader confronts state's Catholic bishops over gay marriage

To My Brothers -- The Catholic Bishops of Minnesota:
In 1976 I was elected a Lutheran bishop in Minnesota -- one of seven such Lutheran leaders in the state. Over the next years one of the highlights of my time in office was the annual noon-to-noon retreat with our eight Catholic counterparts in the state.
The bond that developed between us was deep and respectful. We shared our differences; we celebrated our likenesses. My friendship with Archbishop John Roach and Bishop Raymond Lucker, in particular, is a blessing I will treasure as long as I live.
May I share a word with all of you who now lead the Roman Catholic community of faith in Minnesota?
First, I would go to the wall to defend your right to work for the adoption of the so-called marriage protection amendment. Having said that, I must tell you that I believe you are making a significant mistake.
Over my 35 years as an active and retired bishop I have come to know hundreds of gay and lesbian persons. I have yet to meet even one who is opposed to the marriage of one man and one woman. After all, they are the daughters and sons of such unions.
What they cannot understand is why church leaders would oppose their fundamental desire and right to be in partnership with someone they love and respect who happens to be of the same gender and sexual orientation. They don't understand why they should not enjoy all the rights and privileges their straight counterparts take for granted.

WISCONSIN CHURCH (ELCA) IN LAW SUIT OVER AFFILIATION

While some Protestant churches deal with divisions within their congregations, one Wisconsin church will be taking its affiliation dispute to court.
About 70 members of Grace Lutheran Church of Eau Claire are asking a judge to declare their church exclusively affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
An initial vote taken by the congregation to disaffiliate from the ELCA and join the more conservative Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ failed, but in April Grace Lutheran’s church council then decided to have their church be affiliated with both groups.
As a result, pro-ELCA members have sued to overturn the council’s decision. Until the matter is resolved, many of them are worshipping at the ELCA-affiliated First Lutheran Church of Eau Claire.
“This is a constitutional issue that requires people to follow the governing documents of the church,” said Pastor Scott Miller of First Lutheran to The Christian Post.
“The vote to disaffiliate from the ELCA failed. However, the church council, refusing to accept that outcome, declared that Grace Lutheran would be both ELCA and LCMC, a clear violation of the constitution. ”

3. St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Marion, IA plans to join LCMC and at the same time retain its membership in the ELCA. This action is being taken by the Church Council and not through a vote of the congregation. The congregation previously passed its first vote to leave the ELCA, however the second vote failed. The Church Council wants no further votes taken until at least 2018. One of St. Mark's pastors, Dr. David Hagstrom resigned from the ELCA and joined the LCMC. He is therefore no longer eligible to serve St. Mark's according to ELCA rules. The congregation is now seeking to call another pastor.

NEW YORK (AP) - The latest casualty of the long-running Protestant conflicts over the Bible and homosexuality is a massive network of social service agencies that work in areas ranging from adoption to disaster relief.

The theologically conservative Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod announced this week that direct work with its larger and more liberal counterpart, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has become "difficult if not impossible," because of doctrinal differences, including the 2009 decision by liberal Lutherans to lift barriers for ordaining gays and lesbians.

Neither denomination would discuss the potential financial impact Wednesday. Many Lutheran-affiliated agencies receive substantial state and federal money through contracts and grants that would not be directly affected by any split. However, similar to Catholic Charities, Lutheran agencies are some of the biggest service providers in their communities and have been struggling to meet increased demand for help during the recession.

Just one of the joint Lutheran agencies, Lutheran Services in America, said on its website that it encompasses more than 300 health and human services organizations with a combined annual budget of more than $16 billion.

"We recognize that this is a difficult issue. It's complicated," said the Rev. Herb Mueller, first vice president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, based in St. Louis. "We're trying to take a nuanced and caring approach to all of these situations that's also faithful to what the Bible teaches on these issues."

The Rev. Donald McCoid, an ecumenical officer for the Chicago-based Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, said, "we are deeply concerned about the ministries of care that may be challenged by the recent action of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod."

Harrison issues 'Letter to the Church' concerning military chaplaincy ministry with ELCA

In a "Letter to the Church" released Monday, July 18, LCMS President Dr. Matthew C. Harrison announced that, beginning in 2012, the Synod will no longer co-sponsor its training conferences for military chaplains with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

The decision, which Harrison said was not made lightly, was based on input from the Synod's Ministry to the Armed Forces committee and from active- and reserve-duty LCMS chaplains.

It ends a cooperative ministry that began in 1941 between the LCMS and two other Lutheran church bodies at that time -- The American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church in America. Those two denominations joined the former Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches to form the ELCA in 1988, and the cooperative arrangement continued, with some modifications.

"Today, like two ships at sea sailing apart on different compass headings, the ELCA and the LCMS have lost sight of each other," Harrison writes in the letter. "The two churches are pursuing different courses in our ministries to military members. The doctrinal differences and tensions have been exacerbated by the position of the ELCA on same-sex unions and the imminent repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'"

More than 207 congregations have voted to join the North American Lutheran Church since the August 2010 convocation. The total includes 183 that have completed the voting process and been received as member congregations of the NALC, and remainder have passed at least one congregational vote indicating their intention to join the NALC in the future.

FOUR PERSONS NOMINATED TO BECOME BISHOP OF NALC

Four pastors have been nominated to serve as the
next bishop of the North American Lutheran
Church. The 2011 NALC Convocation Aug. 11-12 in
Hilliard, Ohio, will elect a new bishop to serve a
four-year term.

The Rev. John F. Bradosky, the Rev. James T.
Lehmann, the Rev. Paul A. Schultz, and the Rev.
Jacob Larry Yoder have been nominated to serve
as the NALC’s chief pastor and evangelist.

1. ST. LUKE LUTHERAN CHURCH, MONROE, NC passed second attempt at second vote today, 51-9. They then voted to join LCMC. NC Synod representatives at the meeting told the congregation, their vote was not in order and probably would not be recongized by the Synod or the ELCA. The congregation told them the could do whatever they felt necessary but it would not change things for St. Luke's.
ACCORDING TO MEMBER OF ST. LUKE'S CHURCH COUNCIL, THE BISHOP AT FIRST ADVISED THE CONGREGATION THAT THEY NEED NOT START OVER BUT COULD TAKE ANOTHER SECOND VOTE. The bishop later changed his mind and told them otherwise, but based on the bishop's original statement, the council chose to take another "second" vote.

Fahlun Lutheran Church of Nelson, MN completed the disaffiliation process April 24. Fahlun intends to join its parish partner, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Nelson (which completed the disaffiation process in January 2011), in affiliating with Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC).

This number does not include the membership losses through the establishment of new congregations, nor does it include the thousands that have left the ELCA on their own.

NOTHING BETWEEN

“For there is one God, and one
mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Tim. 2:5).

None but Christ should ever stand between the Church and God. The Church is the Body of Christ, comprised of those who have been redeemed through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Church was established by Jesus Christ. He is the head of the Church. Christ alone empowers the Church, and one day He is coming back, not for denominations or religious organizations, but for His Church.

Under the New Testament pattern the Church is identified through local congregations in specified geographical areas, with no authority over them, save the Word of God. Paul wrote: “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it” (1 Cor. 12:27). When Paul sent letters to “the church of God which is at Corinth,” or to “the churches of Galatia,” or “to the saints in Philippi,” he was not addressing denominations or organizations but only those “sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints” (1 Cor. 1:2).

Denominations are man-made organizations, created to better enable local congregations and individual Christians to carry out their missions and ministries. This is well and good if the servant role is maintained by organized denominations. However, many denominations have changed the role of a servant to one of domination and control over local churches. Today many denominations, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), have usurped the right to control the property of local congregations, even subjecting them to accept beliefs that are contrary to the clear teachings of Scripture. The bitter consequence of this unbiblical type of church polity is evident as local congregations endeavor to break the shackles of their denomination’s imposed authority.

Over the years denominations have placed themselves between local congregations and God through their arrogant insistence that they are the supreme authority regarding matters of faith, truth and practice. The hubris of denominations to draft statements and position papers concerning doctrines and social issues that go against the Word of God stinks to high heavens. Such arrogance has all but destroyed the credibility of these denominations to speak authoritatively to our society about anything.

No denomination, local congregation or individual Christian has the right to say or do anything that contradicts the clear teachings of Scripture. Denominations may pass resolutions or adopt official statements that seek to justify abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, same-sex marriages and a host of other evils, but that does not make it right in the eyes of God. When a denomination makes sin and apostasy part of its official doctrine and practice, Christians have an obligation to oppose it and, where necessary, depart from it.

God’s Word alone is the supreme authority concerning all issues of faith and life, and God will have the last Word! Every denomination and congregation should be pro-life because the Bible is pro-life. Every denomination and congregation should stand for the biblical concept of marriage between one man and one woman, and they should oppose all teachings that are contrary to the Bible.

Over the years, it has been painful to watch local congregations being swallowed up through denominational mergers. Why would a congregation allow itself to be brought under the control of a national church body that requires it to accept teachings and practices contrary to Scripture, or obtain permission to end its relationship with that same denomination? Such decisions could occur only if people are no longer sitting at the feet of Jesus to learn what the Holy Spirit has spoken through His Word!

It is gratifying to see church bodies such as the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations, the American Association of Lutheran Churches, the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ and the North American Lutheran Church establish polity wherein congregations have the freedom to control their own property and make their own decisions.

None but Christ should stand between the local congregation and God, and no higher authority should exist for the local congregation than God’s Word.
