NEW AND REVISED UPDATE ON CONGREGATIONS VOTING TO LEAVE ELCA SINCE AUGUST 2009

Posted 5/28/10 - We have revised our listing and added several additional congregations that were not on the last posting.

Please notify us with additions, corrections, etc. at wordabide@aol.com.Over 240 congregations have successfully voted to leave the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) since August 2009. Listed below (by States) are those known to have begun the process with their first or second vote. A couple of congregations previously listed were dropped from the list because their second vote failed. Numerous congregations have scheduled special meetings to vote on leaving the ELCA in the coming weeks and months.

We offer here the most extensive list of ELCA congregations that have successfully taken their first and/or second votes to leave, but it is not complete by any means.

This is the largest exodus from the ELCA since its inception in 1988, yet there is little reporting being done. The May issue of The Lutheran lists only a small number of congregations that have voted to withdraw since last August, compared with the actual number.

If you want to keep up on what is happening in the ELCA, ask to be put on the mailing list to receive The Vine and Branches, published by Abiding Word Ministries. The next issue comes out in June.

  1. How about a list of newly founded congregations? I would like to submit Bible Lutheran Church, Rincon, Ga. The first service was Nov 8, 2009

  2. To add to the newly formed congregations: Living Word, LCMC, Marshall, MN

While the list of churches leaving the ELCA is significant, the undercurrent of PEOPLE leaving the ELCA is even more significant. We won't know the true impact of the CWA vote until all ELCA churches do a proper accounting of their membership roles and remove those who don't meet the criteria for membership (such as attendence, communion, and/or donations). I'm not sure what the criteria is, but I know at least one church that I attended previously that didn't account appropriately.

  3. One addition that should be recognized is Saint Timothy Lutheran Church, Charleston, West Virginia, which has taken it's first vote to leave and will take their second vote this July. Departing, I believe, to LCMC.

  4. Our church in Salinas, Calif. (75% of ballots)has voted to DISAGREE with the new ELCA policies, but that's as far as it's gone. We need a NEW pastor NOW, one who has signed the Manhatten Declaration. (If you are such a pastor, contact our call committee ASAP.) It is a shame to see your church literally hijacked by a minority. Donations are down. Morale is down. People are leaving a church they've attended for decades. Pray that our church has the courage to vote to leave the ELCA. God bless the courageous ones.

  5. We didn't know how much the morale was down in our church until we voted to come completely away from ELCA. The pastor didn't agree with our decision so he left, that has helped also. We are enjoying hearing the different pastors that have filled our pulpit. We are doing very well, soon we will be seeking a pastor that agrees with us and teaches the TRUE WORD of GOD as it should be. Thanks for telling everyone the truth, so many people think we are the ones that are wrong.

  6. Our former church (St. Matthew's, Lake Ridge, Virginia) of twenty years refused even to discuss the matter when I attempted to bring it up (my wife had to provide a second). The pastor --- channeling Caiaphas, if I'm not mistaken --- declared characterizing deviancy as "deviancy" "offensive," and a confirmation teacher's/Church Council member's resignation was kept hush-hush.

Nevertheless, a painful decision to leave was made easier by the warm welcome we received at a Missouri Synod congregation and its vacancy pastor.

Can't wait to see the new figures on the church census, presuming that they are honest. About that, I have my doubts.

  7. We left our ELCA church in March along with other families that are looking for new church homes. The church we left will not remove members unless actual transfers are received. The church already had done "statistical" updates removing about 30% of it's "claimed" membership a few years ago. It's interesting how the pastors in the ELCA play games to keep the numbers high. Less than 40% of the listed membership are currently active in this particular congregation. I would venture to say that's probably true in most ELCA congregations and when 15-20% of those members leave in reality that church is losing 30 to 40% or more of the truly active committed members they can't afford to lose. Because the rolls are filled with inactive members the numbers leaving seem small but in reality the numbers are huge and churches pastors and synods and bishops are covering this up. The church has also covered up key resignations from the church council and committees at this congregation.
