ELCA FORCES CLOSURE OF ANOTHER CHURCH

Just how many churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) await the fate of Grace Lutheran Church, North Branch, NY? The membership of the church had been dwindling for several years and finances had been a challenge, but members of Grace Lutheran Church were shocked when they received a letter from their ELCA synod that began “In the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" and continued “the Synod will take control of the real and personal property of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church.”

Grace Lutheran members were shocked even more when the ELCA changed the locks on the church doors to keep out the very people whose ancestors had built the church and who until the locks were changed paid for the church’s daily operations.

Such takeovers and closures have not been uncommon in the ELCA, but they will likely increase as more and more members walk out of their churches because of the unbiblical teachings and practices being imposed on local congregations by the national church. Congregations that are voting to leave the ELCA should ponder carefully what will happen if their vote fails and vast numbers of the congregation’s membership departs. It may be only a matter of time until they too will get a letter “In the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Synod will take control of the real and personal property of your church."

The closure of Grace Lutheran Church in North Branch followed the closure this past summer of their sister congregation, First Lutheran Church of Jeffersonville, with whom they had been yoked as a parish.
How refreshing that nearly all of the congregations that have voted to leave the ELCA have joined Lutheran fellowships where the property resides totally in the hands of the local congregation and cannot be taken from them, namely the AFLC, AALC, LCMC and NALC.

ELCA College Course Concludes with Professor and Students Drag Show

(Laity, congregations and pastors who are considering leaving the ELCA may want to hasten their departure after reading this story.)

by Exposing the ELCA

“Higher Standards — Higher Values — Lutheran Higher Education — There's a Difference, and it Lasts a Lifetime.” (quote from here) That is a statement from the official Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s website describing “the 26 colleges and universities of the ELCA . . .” (quote from here)

I leave it to you to decide if the ELCA is living up to the above statement after reading the following:

Muhlenberg College, an ELCA affiliated school, offers first year students a course called "Of Kings and Queens: Drag Theory and Performance."

In a Muhlenberg College posted article entitled, “This class is a drag — and students love it,” it says this about the course, “The students in ‘Of Kings and Queens’ have spent the first three-quarters of the semester reading, writing and analyzing, discussing the politics of gender and sexuality, and coming to understand drag as a cultural phenomenon.

But the highlight of the semester will be the final exam. (Assistant Professor Troy) Dwyer and all 15 of his students are planning a drag show, which they will perform for the public, Dec. 9 at the Stonewall. Dwyer says he believes the course is unique.”

SAN FRANCISCO CHURCH WILL JOIN ELCA THIS SUNDAY

While over 500 churches affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are struggling to break free, St. Francis Lutheran Church, San Francisco, CA is planning to rejoin the ELCA February 27.

St. Francis was expelled from the ELCA in 1996 because it chose to call and ordain practicing homosexuals pastors. With the ELCA’s decision in August 2009 to welcome and receive practicing homosexuals onto its clergy roster, all is now forgiven between St. Francis and the ELCA.

St. Francis will return to the ELCA during a special worship service this coming Sunday afternoon at 3:00 local time. Bishop Mark Holmerud will participate in the welcoming service to receive the congregation back into its good graces.

THIS WEEK'S NEWS FROM CHURCHES - FEB. 21, 2011

A NUMBER OF CHURCHES HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE MOST RECENT LIST OF CHURCHES VOTING TO LEAVE THE ELCA. We appreciate the work of George Erdner to identify these churches.

Hope Lutheran Church, Smethport, PA, was formally organized February 20, under the leadership of Pastor Thomas Beam. A total of 19 persons attended the first service, held at the Free Evangelical Christian Church in Smethport on Sunday morning. Others who are committed to the new congregation bring the total of its members to 26. The congregation also voted to join the North American Lutheran Church (NALC).

After Bethel Lutheran Church, Holdrege, NE passed two successful votes to leave the ELCA, the Nebraska Synod refused to release them. We received a report that the Nebraska Synod had released Bethel Lutheran Church of Holdrige, but we have been informed that the release did not taken place.
The Rev. Tom Gopp, LCMC interim pastor writes: "As much as we want to be released by the Nebraska Synod, as of this writing they have not done so and we are still in negotiations. We have voted to leave the ELCA, joined the LCMC, have formed a call committee to call and LCMC pastor, and are moving forward with our ministry in spite of the Nebraska Synod's decision. We are saddened by the Synod's delay, but it has not dampened our faith nor our enthusiasm to remain faithful to the Word. We have moved on and pray the Synod will graciously release us as they have so graciously released other congregations in the Nebraska Synod."

Peace Lutheran Church, Watertown, MN, voted to join the LCMC this past Sunday. The members of Peace Lutheran left Trinity (ELCA) in Watertown, MN and began worship last August. They recently chartered 110 members. The congregation meets Sunday morning at 9am in the Community Center in Watertown.

The 3rd Leadership Open House for congregations in transition out of ELCA was held Sunday, Feb. 20 at Alma NE, with more than 140 persons from southern Nebraska and northern KS present. Thanks to Peace-Alma (LCMC) for a fabulous job of hosting a crowd that exceeded the planning team's expectations. The series of open houses started 6 months ago at Hope-Smithfield NE (LCMC). It's a collaborative effort of congregations helping congregations through the discernment and decision-making process that so many are going through. We're very intentional about presenting information about both LCMC and NALC. It looks like we'll need to make the next open house plural - as in multiple sites - given the number of congregations in the process and the geographic territory involved. Watch for more details as planning proceeds. We'll send info to Rev. Barnhart's site. Meanwhile, a brief paper describing the "Open House" approach is being prepared. To be placed on an e-mail list for this document, e-mail: hopepastor@rcom-ne.com and write "Open House Paper" in the subject line.

NALC Receives $1 Million Gift for Missions, Theological Education

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The North American Lutheran Church (NALC) has received a $1 million gift that will expand the new church body’s work in carrying out its mission and in training and educating its pastors, the NALC announced Thursday, Feb. 10.

The NALC will use the gift to launch two designated funds that will be significant for the church body’s future. One fund will support theological education — the training and continuing education of NALC pastors. The other fund will be used to provide “Great Commission Grants” to fund special mission projects, including new congregation starts, missionaries, and other initiatives to spread the Gospel and make disciples for Christ.

The $1 million gift was given by Tom and Saundra Smith of Elderton, Pa. The Smiths are members of Mount Union Lutheran Church of Elderton. The Smiths were reluctant to be recognized for their gift, but they agreed to the public announcement because it could inspire others to support these special projects in the NALC.

Mount Union Lutheran Church of Elderton (Shelocta) will cast its second vote to leave the ELCA Sunday Feb. 13.
