Ever since the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) voted to sanction practicing homosexual clergy, ELCA congregations across America have been meeting to examine their future relations with their denomination. A considerable number of congregations have already voted to withdraw membership; others have tried and failed to attain the required 2/3s vote needed to achieve that objective. Still others have voted to discontinue funding the ELCA. It is rare that the ELCA reports such efforts, but the number of ELCA congregations taking such actions are hard to ignore. The fracturing of the ELCA has only begun and the church's leadership knows it.
